You have decided to open a new business location. It can be a new facility for an existing business, or a new business which does not currently exist.

1. Choose a location for the new facility. Explain why you chose that location.

2. Describe what the facility will produce, and estimate the correct capacity.

3. Design the layout of the facility, and draw a plan of the interior and exterior.

4. Analyze the items and quantities of inventory which must be kept on site.

5. Evaluate the economic, environmental and social impacts of the new facility.

NOTE: Examples would be opening a new retail store, medical office, health club,
hair salon, restaurant, or repair shop.

Economic impacts should include estimates of jobs created. Environmental impacts should include traffic, air quality, water quality and solid waste issues. Note that social impacts may be difficult to identify, but may include healthier individuals, and opportunities for recreation, entertainment, culture and/or family activities.

Paper must include a bibliography.

Alternative Energy

Prepare a term paper that analyzes the use of four alternative energy technologies from the following: Wind Energy, Photovoltaic, Solar Thermal, Wave Energy (shore, off-shore, etc.), Tidal Energy, and Hydroelectricity.
Using the NYISO (New York Independent System Operator) data, write an analysis for a plan that would implement four of the aforementioned technologies to offset the utility grid fossil fuel burning power plants in the next 50 years. This analysis should take into account the yearly energy consumption of New York State (from the NYS ISO website: http://www.nyiso.com/. Search for 2022 Load & Capacity Data or Gold Book), including projected growth, and properly offset the fuel burning power plants using the various renewable energy means. Include PROS & CONS of such an endeavor as well as a cost analysis with simple paybacks for each renewable technology used in your report. It is obviously not feasible to replace all of the fossil fueled power plants with alternatives overnight, describe the challenges along with your solutions in a phased approach.

The term paper must be typed with double-spacing, and include proper grammar & spelling, cover page, and table of contents (TOC). You are encouraged to include a few pictures or diagrams to strengthen your idea but they are to be small and embedded within your text, not full stock page pictures. The length of the term paper shall not exceed 20 pages including at least four appropriately acknowledged references on the last page. Appendices are allowed to support your analysis and do not count toward the page limit.
